American Diabetes Association
Public Relations Program
A little known fact: Diabetes kills more people annually than breast cancer and AIDS combined. The Maryland Chapter of the American Diabetes Association approached Vitamin to address this public awareness challenge. Targeting Diabetes Alert Day, Diabetes Awareness Month and African-American Initiatives, Vitamin’s high-impact media campaign accelerated awareness of the deadly diabetes pandemic. Baltimore Ravens defensive powerhouse Haloti Ngata was tapped as a media spokesperson, and a publicity push was aimed at demographically-relevant TV, radio and print media. As a result, Vitamin generated more than 10 million media impressions in less than one year. This unprecedented press coverage for ADA Maryland compelled the National office to designate the regional chapter a “Spotlight Market,” where the fight against diabetes has grown—and surpassed other markets—as a media focus and issue of public concern.
